My husband (who was born in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico) will tell you Americans are the only people who celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and this day only represents a small victory the Mexican army won over the French. OK, fine. So it is not Mexican Independence day, but it won’t stop some of us from celebrating by eating tacos, margaritas, and delicious Mexican cuisine. Here are 3 tips to keeping your Cinco de Mayo healthy:

Make it Skinny:
Choosing the skinny version of margaritas will cut the overall sugar added from the margarita mix. Typical regular margaritas can have as much as 750 calories and 20-50 grams of sugar! Choosing a skinny version can cut your intake closer to 200-250 calories with half the sugar. If you are making it at home, choosing fresh lime juice instead can cut your calorie and sugar intake down even further!
Go for the Corn Tortillas:
When you are ordering, and they ask you “flour or corn?”, choosing corn will not only reduce calorie intake but also sodium and fat. Corn tortillas contain some fiber and small amounts minerals from the corn. Just be careful on how they are prepared before they get to your table. Flash frying may add the nice crunch, but can wreak havoc on your health goals.
Stuff it with Veggies:
Grilled peppers, pico de gallo, shredded lettuce, diced tomato, and grilled onion are some of the amazing vegetables you can add to increase nutrient content and decrease caloric intake for the day. Fresh, grilled, or steamed are great options to add to your taco or as side dishes. The more variety, the better!
So, cheers to you! Enjoy your day whether you consider it a holiday or not! And enjoy a healthy holiday to finish out your week.
